I’m an anticapitalist but retail has my heart.
Retail is my personality.
Retail is my aesthetic.
I worked at Sears. Back in my day, the pay was literally $6.50 an hour/commission. Commission on the jewelry? No, of course not! Commission based on the sale of the protection plan for the jewelry, silly.
Do you know who was buying jewelry from Sears this century? No one! That’s why Sears is gone!! R.I.P.
My mom worked at Walmart. My spouse and I met for the first time at the mall. My future offspring, if I have any, will not go their lives without a enjoying an Orange Julius® smoothie.
Retail is my life.
People who are too good for Facebook are missing out on Facebook groups. Specifically the groups about retail like this one and this one.
Rural Retail Report
Blair County (which includes the center of my universe, Altoona) has now been deemed as “Rural Middle America” from its previous designation of “Middle Suburb” by the American Communities Project.
Concurrently at the same time, Altoona is still waiting for the opening of Rural King at the former Kmart on W. Plank Road.
Rural King is owner of the site which has been vacant going on 5 years now.
But where is our Rural King??
Per the gossip on All About Altoona, the roof of the building is not okay.
Could Rural King move into the former Sears, located at the Logan Valley Mall next door?
Rural King already found a home replacing the former Sears at the Nittany Mall up in Centre County and took awhile to complete before their grand opening.
But then what becomes of the old Kmart?

The Altoona area is know for demolishing the old quickly to rebuild the new.
What responsibility does Logan Township have to ensure this building doesn’t fall into further decay if Rural King gives up on it?
If it’s any indication, the owners of Century III Mall in West Mifflin, Allegheny County are just now starting demolition after they were criminally charged for abandonment and judge ruled the mall had to be torn down.
altoona tartare~ will keep you updated on the progress of the long awaited Rural King and never forget our Kmart Queens.
